Green Peas Kurma Recipe/ Peas Kurma


Peas masala was a staple food during my childhood as my mother used to prepare chapatis every day for dinner , though we are South Indians.😋 and that was the only curry I used to like with chapatti those days.During a trip to Kollur last year, I tasted this curry at a restaurant .It tasted similar to my moms curry except adding fennel with coconut.I just loved the flavour of fennel with coconut.Sharing my version peas kurma.

Cooking Time  : 20-25 min
Serves :  4

* I have not used green chillies ,you can add 1 or 2 chillies adjusting the spice level.
* In this recipe I used dry green peas ,if you are using frozen green peas skip the first step and boil
   peas with gravy for 5-8 min or till cooked.
* Since this is a coconut based gravy ,I recommend to use coconut oil.It enhance the taste.
* Do not add more fennel seed .
*Simmer after adding coconut, do not bring to boil.


Ingredients


Dry Green Peas(soaked for 4-5 hrs)/Frozen peas  _ 2 cup
Onion(1 large) _  1 cup (roughly chopped)
Tomato(1 medium) _ 1/2 (cup chopped)
Ginger Garlic crushed  _ 1+1 tsp
Coriander powder  _ 1 tsp
Garam masala Powder  _ 1tsp
Turmeric Powder _ 1 tsp+1/2 tsp
Chilly Powder  _ 1 tsp+1tsp
Salt  _ as needed
Coconut Oil - 2 tbsp
Cumin seeds _1 tsp
curry leaves _  few

To Grind


Coconut(grated)  _  1/3 cup
Fennel Seeds  _  1/2 tsp

1. In a pressure cooker ,cook green peas adding turmeric powder, red chilly powder and salt.



2. Mean while heat oil in a kadai temper cumin seeds .In medium flame add ginger and garlic saute for a second ,add onion .Saute till it turns golden brown.
3.Add tomatoes and cook.


4.Now add turmeric powder, chilly powder,coriander powder and garam masala .Mix well keep in low flame till masala are cooked and oil starts leaving the side of kadai.

5.Add cooked green peas and mix well .keep the lid closed and cook for 5-10 min in medium flame.
   If you are using frozen peas ,add peas and boil till its cooked.

6. In the small bowl of a mixer grind coconut and fennel seed to smooth paste .


7. Add the coconut paste to the gravy mix well .Simmer for a minute, do not boil .Finally add curry leaves and serve hot with rotis or puri.
